Preferred location(s) for this position is Wärtsilä’s location in Suzhou.
Responsibilities:
Provide technical leadership and serve as the subject matter expert for battery energy storage systems, including Li-ion battery architecture, AC/DC electrical design, battery management systems (BMS), module design, and fire safety.
Collaborate in the development of current and future energy storage product, ensuring they meet relevant industry standards such as UL9540, UL9540A, NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 855, IEC62933, UL1741, UL1973, IEC61508, and IEEE1574.
Build and manage the team for the China Engineering Office .
Coordinate cross-functional collaboration between mechanical, electrical, software, verification, testing, and manufacturing teams to achieve project goals.
Act as the technical lead for the engineering team, providing mentorship, coaching, and direction.
Collaborate with the US Product team, and report activities.
Ensure a deep understanding of how energy storage system components interact and define the tasks needed to implement changes.
Support the resolution of critical issues related to electrical, mechanical, and BMS concerns either for design or manufacturing.
Participate in the engineering change management process and provide input for project managers during gate reviews.
Define the tasks required to complete New Product Introduction (NPI) projects.
Continuously work towards process improvements to enhance product functionality and effectiveness.
Conduct root cause analyses of failures, propose design or component changes, and implement and validate those changes.
Foster a collaborative team environment and take charge of opportunities to develop optimal solutions for product development programs.
Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering; advanced degree preferred.
10+ years of electrical or mechanical engineering experience focused on designing and testing power systems, control panels, battery modules, and Battery Management Systems (BMS), preferably in the battery energy storage industry.
5+ years of experience leading design engineering teams.
Experience on product development and systems engineering experience, with a focus on the battery energy storage industry is a plus.
Ability to provide guidance and feedback to help others strengthen their knowledge and skills.
Expertise in designing, configuring, and validating battery energy storage systems, including component selection, system architecture, site layout, functional safety analyses, auxiliary load estimation, thermal system (HVAC/Chiller) sizing, and battery sizing/configuration could be a plus.
Working knowledge of industrial control philosophies and communication protocols.
Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical, CAMEO, and Inventor (or similar CAD tools).
Strong understanding of good documentation practices.
Excellent problem-solving and innovative mindset.
Flexible and adaptable, with a willingness to learn.
Maintain positive working relationships with customers, peers, subordinates, vendors, shop and office in a fast-paced environment.
Fluent in written and verbal English and Mandarin Chinese; strong interpersonal skills.
Willingness to travel up to 20% of the time.
